Small businesses play a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, accounting for 18% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and providing jobs for 60% of the workforce. Acknowledging their vital contributions, the government has reiterated its commitment to supporting National Small and Medium Enterprises (NSMEs) as essential drivers in realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a recent effort to empower local entrepreneurs, four business owners from Lamini Village in Taveuni received significant assistance. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, awarded them a ‘Grant Agreement’ through the Ministry’s Trade Enhancement Programme.
This grant is designed to bolster and grow their roadside businesses, demonstrating the government’s dedication to strengthening small enterprises and promoting economic development in rural communities.
This initiative not only helps local entrepreneurs thrive but also contributes to the overall economic resilience of Fiji, highlighting the government’s proactive approach in fostering a supportive environment for small businesses. As these entrepreneurs expand their operations, it is likely to create more job opportunities and stimulate growth in their communities.
