The International Day of the Midwife, celebrated annually on May 5, shines a light on the critical and multifaceted role midwives play in maternal healthcare. Talisa Balenaitalatala, a midwife at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals), emphasized that midwives serve as advocates, educators, and crucial first responders in the field, providing comprehensive care from antenatal appointments through to postnatal recovery.

Midwives are tasked with ensuring that mothers and newborns are safe, informed, and empowered throughout the pregnancy journey. Balenaitalatala highlighted that their responsibilities extend beyond merely facilitating births; they are integral in advocating for women’s rights, particularly in crisis situations where those rights are often compromised. “We don’t just help women bring life into the world; we help them reclaim their strength and dignity,” she stated.

The midwife also underscored the value of early antenatal bookings and continuous monitoring to address potential health complications such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia, which is crucial in improving maternal and infant health outcomes. PSH Hospitals’ founder and CEO, Parvish Kumar, reaffirmed the vital contributions of midwives, acknowledging their dedication and the challenges they face, particularly during crises like natural disasters or pandemics, where they operate with limited resources yet steadfast commitment.

This emphasis on the critical role of midwives mirrors efforts seen across the healthcare sector aimed at advancing maternal health, including discussions of women’s contributions in various fields during events like International Women’s Day. Both emphasize the need for ongoing investment and support in the midwifery profession amid rising demands on healthcare systems.

As nations move to strengthen healthcare systems, the message remains clear: supporting midwives is essential for ensuring healthy pregnancies and births, paving the way for a brighter future for mothers and their children. These initiatives not only nurture community health but also foster resilience within healthcare frameworks, offering hope for improved maternal care across the globe.
