With the national budget approaching, numerous senior citizens have expressed their hopes for an increase in welfare allowances, citing how significant such support can be in meeting their everyday needs. The current assistance is crucial for many to afford basic necessities such as food, medicine, and transportation costs.

Raicakacaka Rabuka, a 69-year-old senior citizen, emphasized the difference the governmental allowances make in her household. She noted, “It helps me a lot to clear some of the bills, mostly bills and some of the food, but my daughter is always ensuring that our foodstuff is there.” The sentiments of relief and gratitude resonate widely among the elderly population who rely on these funds.

Another voice in this conversation, 85-year-old Mere Marama, indicated that the $150 she receives monthly is vital for her medications and purchasing food, particularly fruits, which she enjoys. She also welcomed the potential for an increase in the upcoming budget.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has hinted at positive changes for social welfare recipients in the forthcoming budget. According to him, the government’s focus remains on building upon the previous support provided since taking office. He stated, “We increased the social welfare allowances across the board in the first budget, and we have ensured that we continue to assess the need for additional social protections, all that will be considered in the next budget.”

The budget announcement is set for April 27th, and the discussions around it come in the light of broader considerations for welfare enhancements that have been previously highlighted by community leaders and government officials. For instance, during recent consultations for the national budget, calls for improved funding for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with disabilities, were underscored.

The proactive measures and discussions indicate a growing awareness of the pressing needs of these segments of the population, reflecting collective aspirations for improved living conditions and support systems. As government officials prepare for the upcoming budget, these dialogues foster optimism for a more equitable future that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.
