Novak Djokovic announced on Sunday that he will be stepping away completely from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the organization he co-founded. His decision stems from concerns regarding transparency and governance within the group. Djokovic, who started the PTPA with Vasek Pospisil in 2020 to enhance player representation in tennis, expressed that his values no longer align with the organization’s current trajectory.

In a statement shared on X, Djokovic highlighted his pride in the vision that led to the PTPA’s establishment, focusing on empowering players with an independent voice. However, he also noted that he feels disenchanted with how his contributions and image have been portrayed. Djokovic plans to redirect his energy towards his tennis career, family, and other contributions that align with his principles.

He extended his best wishes to the players and stakeholders involved in the PTPA but affirmed that he is closing this chapter in his career.

In response to Djokovic’s departure, the PTPA issued a statement emphasizing that the organization was created to ensure stronger and more transparent representation for professional tennis players. They reiterated their commitment to addressing concerns and facilitating communication within the player community.

The PTPA has been involved in legal action against tennis’s governing bodies—ATP, WTA, International Tennis Federation, and International Tennis Integrity Agency—accusing them of anti-competitive practices. The governing bodies have firmly rejected these allegations. The lawsuit was expanded in September to include the organizers of the Grand Slam events, asserting that they have not adequately prioritized player welfare.

In a glimmer of progress, the PTPA announced in November that it is nearing a deal with Tennis Australia, ahead of the Australian Open, which is set to commence in Melbourne on January 18. This positive development may signify a potential shift toward improved collaboration within the sport, despite Djokovic’s withdrawal from the organization.
