Delcy Rodriguez has emerged as a prominent figure in Venezuelan politics, recently assuming the role of interim president following the capture of Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces. Known for her economic conservatism and an affinity for cultivating ties with the private sector, the 56-year-old leader has garnered significant influence, earning titles such as “the tsarina” while Maduro referred to her as a “tigress” owing to her fierce defense of his administration. Under her leadership, Venezuela has navigated one of the most severe economic crises in its history, marked by widespread allegations of human rights abuses, including torture and arbitrary detentions, leading to the displacement of approximately 8 million citizens.

Rodriguez has served as vice president since 2018, in addition to holding positions as finance and oil minister. Her extensive experience includes roles as communications minister, foreign minister, and head of the pro-government legislature. She collaborates closely with her brother, Jorge Rodriguez, who leads the National Assembly. The siblings come from a politically charged background; their father, a leftist guerrilla fighter, faced police brutality that, according to their family, resulted in his death while in custody.

Having studied labor law in France and England, Delcy Rodriguez is also an enthused table tennis player, regularly competing with her brother. Her public persona often showcases her affinity for luxury fashion, drawing attention in a country grappling with severe economic hardship.

During her tenure as vice president, she faced the challenges of hyperinflation exacerbated by U.S. sanctions. In response, Rodriguez adopted strict economic policies, including slashing public expenditure and establishing a fixed exchange rate, which successfully curbed triple-digit inflation. Her strategic oversight of oil production has been pivotal, maintaining an average output of about 1.1 million barrels per day in the past year. Rodriguez’s commitment to re-engaging with the private sector sets her apart from previous officials, while her frequent travels to ally nations such as China, Russia, and Turkey highlight her role in international diplomatic relations.

In a country facing immense challenges, Rodriguez’s actions and policies may usher in a new chapter for Venezuela, positioning her as a key player in its political landscape.
