Josefata Sigadua has dedicated over two decades of his life to farming in the village of Dakuivuna, where agriculture has become the foundation of his livelihood. Relying heavily on the land for more than ten years, Mr. Sigadua emphasizes that farming is not just a means of income; it is also essential for his family’s survival.
Through his hard work and commitment, he has managed to cultivate a variety of crops such as cassava, uvi, kumala, duruka, rourou, and various vegetables. “These crops form the foundation of my household’s daily meals,” Mr. Sigadua stated. He believes that farming is more than just a job; it is a way of life passed down through generations. The planting season brings with it a sense of hope, while each harvest serves as a testament to the efforts he and his wife invest in their land.
However, Mr. Sigadua’s journey is not without its set of challenges. He often grapples with unpredictable weather conditions that can severely impact crop yields. “Extended dry periods, heavy rainfall, or sudden changes in climate can damage crops,” he explained, highlighting the uncertainties faced by farmers who depend solely on their harvest for sustenance and income.
Additionally, the lack of access to modern farming machinery has compounded his struggles. Without tractors or tillers, he mainly relies on manual labor, which is a daunting task as he ages. “Using simple tools like a cane knife requires a great deal of physical strength and time, making land preparation slow and exhausting,” he shared. Despite these obstacles, his determination to provide for his family fuels his daily efforts on the farm.
Farming contributes significantly to the overall well-being of Mr. Sigadua’s family. His crop production ensures that the household has a consistent supply of food, reducing reliance on store-bought items. “This has helped my family maintain a healthy and sustainable lifestyle,” he said, reiterating the importance of homegrown produce.
In addition to sustaining his family, Mr. Sigadua’s farm occasionally provides financial support through orders from relatives living in the city for root crops. These sales help cover basic expenses and reinforce the farm’s role as a crucial economic resource. “Most of the crops are used for household consumption, but these orders assist greatly in fulfilling financial needs,” he stated.
Currently, Mr. Sigadua and his wife continue to live in Dakuivuna, even as their children have started their own families. They take pride in sharing the fruits of their labor with their grandchildren, who often join them to enjoy the abundance of food produced on the farm.
Ultimately, Mr. Sigadua views farming as a symbol of hard work, self-reliance, and a commitment to family. Despite the weather challenges and limited resources, his farm remains a critical source of nourishment and occasional income, supporting him and his loved ones year after year. “Most of us tend to forget that where there is land, there is money!” he said, reflecting his belief in the importance of agriculture in sustaining life.
