Tropical Cyclone Rae has inflicted significant damage on the Cicia crossway, leaving it 80 percent unusable. Provincial Administrator Lau Iokobo Waqanidrola emphasized the pressing need for repairs, highlighting that the cyclone has heavily impacted access for neighboring communities and vessels. A dedicated team focused on post-cyclone relief and damage assessments is currently deployed throughout the Lau Group, also distributing essential rations.
Waqanidrola noted, “So far, only one major damage that we received from Cicia, the Cicia crossway, the jetty… Our plan for now we’ll take the Vunilagi to cut the machine from Vanuabalabu to Cicia to fix the crossway.” The coordination among relief teams has improved significantly since past cyclones, enhancing both communication and response strategies vital for effective post-disaster assessments.
Residents also shared their challenging experiences during TC Rae, with Namuka-i-Lau Turaga ni Koro Ledua Waqabula describing a harrowing 10-hour ordeal of strong winds and torrential rain. However, the aftermath revealed that the devastation was relatively limited, with only two houses completely destroyed and others suffering roof damage.
Relief efforts involve a collaboration of various agencies, including the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Red Cross, both of whom are committed to remaining in the Lau Group for three weeks to support recovery initiatives. This collaborative effort underscores the resilience of the Fijian community in the face of natural disasters, wherein solidarity is essential for recovery.
The cooperative spirit demonstrated in this crisis not only meets immediate needs but also instills a sense of hope, showcasing the strength of the community in overcoming adversity and rebuilding for the future. The swift response from local authorities and citizens alike further illustrates a dedicated commitment to restoring normalcy and safety following this challenging event. Overall, the actions taken reflect a community prepared to support one another in recovery and rebuilding efforts.
