Ioan Cunningham, former head coach of the Wales Women’s rugby team, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Vodafone Fijiana XV. He will lead the squad as they gear up for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England this August, marking a pivotal moment for the Fijiana as they seek to achieve international success.

Cunningham brings extensive coaching experience, having previously steered the Welsh team to impressive results, including a third-place finish in the Six Nations and a rise to sixth place in the world rankings. Fiji Rugby Women’s High Performance Manager Alana Thomas has commended Cunningham’s professionalism and leadership abilities, expressing optimism in his capability to tap into the squad’s potential during this critical year leading up to the World Cup.

Fiji Rugby Chief Executive Rovereto Nayacalevu echoed these sentiments, stating, “His expertise and experience at the international level make him the ideal leader as we prepare for the Rugby World Cup.” Cunningham has also shared his enthusiasm for this new venture, recognizing the talent within the Fijiana squad and the significance of the year ahead for women’s rugby.

This leadership change follows a challenging period for the Fijiana, who recently secured a fourth-place finish in the WXV 3 tournament. The team is now focused on strengthening its lineup to compete effectively in their upcoming World Cup pool matches against Canada, Scotland, and Wales.

Cunningham is known for transforming the Welsh squad from an amateur to a fully professional team, achieving historic milestones such as their first victory over Australia. His leadership is viewed as a crucial factor in helping the Fijiana reach their maximum potential as they aim to leave a lasting impression in the World Cup.

With Cunningham at the helm, there is a renewed sense of hope and excitement surrounding the Vodafone Fijiana XV. The blend of his coaching prowess and the growing talent in Fiji’s women’s rugby signals a promising future for the team as they enter upcoming competitions.
