Local city councils have received a directive to enhance enforcement efforts, ensuring all property developments adhere to legal standards. Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Local Government and Housing, emphasized that municipal councils and landlords share the responsibility of overseeing construction activities.

Councils are mandated to inspect all developments within their jurisdictions, confirming that projects, including home extensions and modifications, have the necessary approvals and meet required standards. Nalumisa stressed that it is essential for councils to actively monitor these developments and issue notices to those who are complying with the law, ensuring they receive the necessary oversight.

He acknowledged that illegal building activities have persisted over time, but reaffirmed that robust enforcement mechanisms are already established and must be applied consistently. Such monitoring involves not only reviewing documentation but also conducting site inspections to ensure that construction aligns with the approved plans.

Additionally, Nalumisa pointed out that landlords play a crucial role in this process. They are responsible for preventing tenants from making unauthorized alterations that would contravene council regulations. He cautioned that non-compliance can lead to serious consequences, including structural safety issues, environmental harm, and increased strain on public services.

The Minister reiterated that enforcing building laws is vital in safeguarding communities, ensuring developments are not only legal but also safe and compatible with urban planning standards. Councils will continue to monitor ongoing projects and will act promptly by issuing notices when necessary, underlining their commitment to maintaining compliance within the property development sector. This proactive approach aims to foster a more orderly and secure environment for all residents.
