The government has confirmed that a fuel leak at an industrial facility in Walu Bay has been successfully contained, with inspections revealing no evidence of fuel contamination in nearby waterways or any adverse effects on marine life. In an official statement, the government indicated that joint inspections were conducted by the Department of Environment, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Ministry of Health in response to the incident.

Immediate action was taken as containment systems were activated to direct the leaked fuel into the facility’s bund and separator pit. Furthermore, fuel transfer operations were efficiently carried out to lower tank levels and facilitate necessary repairs, with assistance from the National Fire Authority.

Inspectors noted that only limited overflow occurred within the site’s boundary, which is currently being managed through a controlled clean-up process, supervised by regulatory authorities. Drone surveillance of drainage outlets and nearby river systems conducted around Walu Bay showed no signs of fuel discharge.

“The inspections show no observed impacts on marine life or the surrounding riverine environment at this time,” the government statement emphasized. Monitoring efforts will persist as a precautionary measure. The operator of the facility has been instructed to assume responsibility for all containment and clean-up expenses, and regulatory notices requiring full remediation, preventive maintenance, and infrastructure upgrades have been issued.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing regulatory oversight to safeguard public safety and mitigate environmental risks. These actions reflect a proactive and responsible approach to environmental management and public safety, fostering hope for continued advancements in regulatory practices and ecosystem protection.
