China and Fiji are set to strengthen their longstanding partnership, as emphasized by the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, during a press conference in Suva. Zhou urged both nations to uphold mutual respect and equal treatment while continuing to support each other’s core interests and major concerns. He underscored China’s commitment to non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and reaffirmed support for Fiji’s sovereignty, security, and development interests.

Zhou highlighted the 50-year history of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji, attributing their successful partnership to this mutual respect and equal footing. He also reiterated China’s principle of equality among nations, regardless of size, and advocated for the “four full respects” principle when engaging with Pacific Island Countries (PICs). This principle involves recognizing their sovereignty, will, cultural traditions, and efforts to gain strength through unity.

Despite challenges such as sanctions and isolation, Zhou emphasized China’s steadfast support for Fiji, encouraging solidarity and true multilateralism. He declared that international affairs should be managed through consultation and that inclusive and open cooperation is essential, particularly in the vast and open Pacific Ocean.

China’s evolving partnership with Fiji is grounded in a comprehensive strategic framework that includes initiatives across various sectors such as infrastructure, trade, and agriculture. Furthermore, the collaborative endeavors extend to promoting sustainable economic diversification through strategic imports and investments, which align with Fiji’s plan for long-term economic development.

The ambassador’s reaffirmation also underlines China’s consistent support for Fiji’s development trajectory, which aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s vision for an “Ocean of Peace.” This ongoing cooperation suggests a promising path for mutual economic resilience and growth, fostering a hopeful and beneficial future for both nations in the Pacific region.

Overall, China’s enduring support and strategic partnership with Fiji remain a beacon for collaborative success, promising strengthened ties characterized by mutual advancement and a shared commitment to global challenges.
