The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged Barbara Malimali, the head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), to resign or step aside during the ongoing investigation concerning her conduct.
Seruiratu expressed significant concern about the allegations facing Malimali, which were brought to attention by the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa. The complaint, lodged with the Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, includes serious claims of office abuse, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses.
In light of these serious allegations, Seruiratu believes that Malimali should either resign or be suspended until the investigation concludes. He emphasized that this step is crucial for ensuring transparency and restoring public confidence in FICAC and various institutions.
He raised critical questions about the integrity of Malimali’s position, arguing that it is unacceptable for an anti-corruption chief to remain in office under such serious scrutiny. Seruiratu called on the Judicial Services Commission, which appointed Malimali, to take decisive action to uphold accountability and integrity in public service.
This situation highlights a vital moment for Fiji’s institutions, with the potential for reform and strengthening the public trust amidst challenges. By addressing these allegations seriously and transparently, there is an opportunity for systemic improvements that can enhance the governance landscape in Fiji moving forward.
In summary, the call for Malimali to either resign or step aside reflects growing concerns about accountability in FICAC. It underscores the need for maintaining public trust in anti-corruption efforts, with the hope that this situation catalyzes positive reforms.
