Bureta Young Boys Rugby Club: A Rising Force in Fiji’s Rugby Scene

The Bureta Young Boys Rugby Club (BYB), established in 2024, is set to participate in the R.C. Manubhai Natovi Sevens tournament from June 26 to 28 at the Natovi grounds. Originally known as Tovolea Rugby, the team has made impressive strides since their debut at the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament.

Under the guidance of head coach Josateki Soveavavanua, BYB has transformed from a group of scattered players to a cohesive unit with a clear mission: using rugby as a foundation to empower youth and combat challenges such as drug use. “Our greatest ambition is to help our boys secure rugby contracts overseas so they can support their families,” Soveavavanua stated. To maintain the integrity of the team, they adhere strictly to a no-drug policy, dropping any player found violating it from tournament squad selections.

The club has already competed in five major tournaments, including the Adi Natovi Sevens and the Yalovata Sevens, achieving notable success by reaching the Cup semi-finals in one of these competitions. Training sessions are held daily at Albert Park for the Suva-based players, while players from the village continue their training in their home communities.

This club exemplifies how sports can serve as a powerful vehicle for personal development and community growth. Much like other youth teams in Fiji, like the Village Boys, BYB also highlights the vital role of teamwork and dedication, inspiring youth to pursue their dreams within and beyond rugby.

With their aspirations not only focused on games but also on fostering positive lifestyles among players, BYB stands as a beacon of hope and ambition for young athletes in Fiji. The road ahead looks promising as they prepare to leave their mark at the upcoming tournament.
