Melbourne Storm’s seasoned prop Tui Kamikamica has emerged as a prospective target for the Brisbane Broncos, eyeing a potential move for the 2026 NRL season and beyond. The Fiji Bati captain currently has a club option for the next year in his contract, but there are uncertainties surrounding Melbourne’s decision to activate it due to salary cap constraints.
Melbourne is navigating a tight salary cap situation and shedding Kamikamica’s salary could offer the club some much-needed financial relief as they look to promote young talents. This comes after the recent re-signing of Alec MacDonald, while Lazarus Vaalepu has struggled to break into Melbourne’s top 17, competing against established forwards like Stefano Utoikamanu and Nelson Asofa-Solomona.
Reports indicate that Michael Maguire and the Broncos have made inquiries into Kamikamica’s status, suggesting a move north might be on the horizon. While Melbourne is keen to retain Kamikamica, much depends on the financial implications for both clubs.
Despite the Broncos also facing salary cap limitations, they have several contract spots available for the next season. Currently, they have not signed any players for 2026 but have 14 players out of contract, hinting at flexibility that could allow them to accommodate Kamikamica’s contract.
Given Kamikamica’s extensive experience, with 123 NRL games and 18 Test matches for Fiji, his addition would significantly bolster the Broncos’ roster. Additionally, he might find himself with increased playing time in Brisbane, especially with uncertainties around the ideal prop partner for Payne Haas as Patrick Carrigan may revert back to his lock position.
This interest from the Broncos comes on the heels of earlier speculation that the South Sydney Rabbitohs were close to signing Kamikamica, but were constrained by their own salary cap issues.
As player movements continue to shape the landscape of the NRL, possibilities for talented players like Kamikamica open doors for new beginnings and competitive dynamics within teams. His potential transition highlights the evolving nature of rugby league, where established players seek fresh challenges. With his experience and proven track record, Kamikamica’s future looks promising, whether in Melbourne or with the Broncos, contributing to the league’s excitement as teams reconfigure their strategies for the upcoming seasons.
