A Bangladeshi national is currently hospitalized after an alleged assault in Suva last Friday. The incident reportedly occurred when the man, a driver for Dee Cee’s Bus Services Limited, engaged in a confrontation with another driver along Gaji Road. Following the altercation, he was allegedly pursued to the garage of the bus company by a man believed to be affiliated with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

According to the bus company’s claims, it was at this location that the driver was assaulted. In response, a police report has been filed, and a separate report has been submitted to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai indicated that he would investigate the matter further. If the individual involved is confirmed to be an active member of the military, it is likely that they would face dismissal and a thorough investigation.

Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh has publicly condemned the incident, affirming that no worker, whether local or foreign, deserves to be treated in such a manner. He stated, “Indeed it is very sad that workers anywhere are assaulted by anyone. It is illegal, it is not acceptable by any standard, and whoever has done it must face the full brunt of the law.” Singh highlighted that the law is designed to protect all workers equally, regardless of their nationality.

As investigations into the matter continue, the victim remains in the hospital receiving treatment. The authorities are expected to take necessary action to ensure justice is served, reflecting a commitment to worker safety in Fiji.
