Auckland City FC Steps Back: What’s Next for Oceania Football?

Auckland City FC has officially stated that it has not submitted an expression of interest for the upcoming OFC Pro League and confirmed its non-participation in the competition. The club, known for its strong commitment to the development of football in Oceania, is redirecting its focus to various upcoming tournaments, including the FIFA Club World Cup USA 2025™, the OFC Champions League, the Northern League, the Chatham Cup, and the National League Championship.

Ivan Vuksich, the chairperson of Auckland City FC, has been involved in consulting with stakeholders looking into opportunities within the OFC Pro League, albeit in a private capacity. This indicates the club’s ongoing engagement with football development in the region, even as it steps back from direct involvement in this particular league.

In contrast, the OFC Pro League is generating significant excitement, with 24 teams from across the Pacific expressing interest in joining the league set to launch in January 2026. Among those interested, four teams from Fiji have emerged, showcasing the growing competitiveness and enthusiasm for professional football in the region.

The OFC Professional League is expected to revolutionize the football landscape in Oceania by providing a structured and professional environment for elite clubs. With a competitive framework established, the league aims to enhance local football standards and serve as a platform for future talent, particularly as the region prepares for its guaranteed spot in the 2026 World Cup.

Overall, while Auckland City FC is focusing on its illustrious history and current commitments, the growing interest in the OFC Pro League signals an optimistic future for football across Oceania, fostering community engagement and paving new pathways for professional success in the sport.
