Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School is gearing up for the Suva Zone One Athletics competition, where they will attempt to defend their title amidst significant changes in their team roster. MGM Athletics coach Waliki Satakala acknowledged that the team faces challenges, particularly with several athletes leaving for other schools or graduating from secondary education.
Despite these hurdles, Satakala remains hopeful and expressed confidence in their ability to defend the girls’ division title. “We are confident we’ll be able to defend the girls’ division, but for the boys, we might have a different result because the majority of our athletes have either gone abroad or to other schools,” he remarked.
As the school has been diligently preparing over the past few weeks, they anticipate a competitive atmosphere at this year’s championships. The Suva Zone One competition kicked off with the 100 meter heats at the HFC Bank Stadium, complemented by live coverage through FBC Sports.
This year’s event is poised to be exciting, showcasing both seasoned athletes and newcomers making their first appearance on the track and field. Such competitions are vital for the development of young athletes, providing them with the thrill of competition and the motivation for future pursuits.
As schools unite for this esteemed event, the spirit of community and sportsmanship is expected to flourish, underscoring the importance of youth sports in promoting teamwork, resilience, and personal growth among participants. The upcoming athletics competition promises not only to be a test of athleticism but also an opportunity for character building and fostering lifelong friendships.
