Opposition MP Premila Kumar, representing the Group of 16, voiced strong criticism of the government’s economic outlook during a recent address. She emphasized the disconnect between reported economic growth and the daily struggles of ordinary Fijians. Highlighting that numbers on paper do not feed families or pay rent, Kumar questioned how many citizens genuinely feel relief when shopping or settling utility bills.

Kumar pointed out that many Fijians are seeing little improvement in their quality of life, particularly as costs for essential goods and services continue to rise. She expressed concern over the increasing burden of duties, taxes, and Value Added Tax (VAT) on hardworking families.

According to Kumar, the government’s narrative of economic progress appears to benefit only a select few, particularly large corporations and well-connected individuals, leaving the majority grappling with financial hardships.

This commentary sheds light on the pressing economic challenges faced by Fijian citizens, suggesting a call for greater attention to inclusive economic policies that would support everyone, not just the privileged.

As this dialogue continues, it is crucial for the government to respond to the genuine concerns of its citizens, ensuring that economic growth translates into tangible benefits for all. A collaborative effort between the government and the community could pave the way for solutions that address rising costs and promote a more equitable distribution of resources.
