Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure over the Fiji group is bringing a moist east to southeast flow and a band of cloud, showers and isolated thunderstorms across much of the northern and eastern islands. These conditions are expected to persist through today, with another trough of low pressure forecast to approach from the west and begin affecting the group later on Sunday.

Today’s heaviest activity is focused over parts of Viti Levu — from Serua and Namosi through Navua-Suva-Nausori, Naitasiri, Tailevu North and Ra–Rakiraki — as well as the Yasawa group, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are likely in these areas. Elsewhere conditions will be mostly partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms; localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Tomorrow most areas will see easing activity to cloudy periods with some showers across Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Cakaudrove and southern Bua, Taveuni, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere should be largely fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls remain a possibility. Winds are expected to be moderate east to southeast, fresh at times, becoming easterly later, and seas are forecast to be moderate to rough.

The outlook for Sunday shows the influence of the approaching trough, with cloudy periods and some showers expected again over the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Cakaudrove and eastern Macuata, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby islands, Lau and Lomaiviti, and Taveuni. Elsewhere will be mainly fine apart from afternoon or evening showers. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls are possible, and localised heavy falls could again lead to flash flooding in vulnerable locations. Winds will shift to moderate to fresh east to northeasterly, with moderate to rough seas.

Local highlights: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls today and a top near 32°C, then cloudy periods with some showers through tomorrow and Sunday (min 23°C, max 32°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba will be partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening showers today and possible thunderstorms (max 33°C), with generally fine conditions apart from late-day showers over the next two days. Rotuma remains largely fine apart from brief showers, with moderate easterly winds and moderate seas, and temperatures near 24–32°C.
