The highly anticipated inter-house athletics competition at Adi Cakobau School (ACS) unfolded at the HFC Bank National Stadium, marking an exciting kickoff on the journey toward the Coca-Cola Games for this esteemed all-girls institution.

Ravuama Latilevu, the school’s media liaison officer, conveyed the primary aim of the event, emphasizing the identification of talented athletes within the ACS community. “The overall objective for today’s inter-house is to identify role talents, especially among the girls here at ACS,” Latilevu remarked.

With the exit of senior gold medalists from previous competitions, ACS is now shifting its focus to cultivate promising runners from the junior grades, particularly those new to years 9 and 10. Historically, ACS has showcased its prowess at the Coca-Cola Games, clinching the Girls Division titles in both 2022 and 2023, and boasting over 15 championship titles while consistently finishing in the top three.

Latilevu noted the challenges ahead, stating, “It has been two years now since we have been girls’ champions. Last year showed improvement, and this year we aim to better our position in the medal tally.” Despite the graduation of several senior athletes, the school remains committed to building a strong team.

A key factor in ACS’s strategy to reclaim its championship status is the return of former sprinting star Makelesi Batimala as the head coach. Latilevu emphasized the importance of her experience and leadership as an invaluable asset in their quest for excellence.

This year’s inter-house competition witnessed remarkable participation, with over 1,000 athletes taking part. The heats were specifically designed to enhance participation and enable coaches and managers to identify the best talent for the upcoming season. Latilevu stated, “We have ensured maximum participation from all the girls so that our team of coaches and managers have a broader selection option.”

As the school looks toward the upcoming NNN zone competition, ACS is determined to defend its girls’ title and enhance its medal count. “Our goal is to get as many girls as possible to qualify for the future finals,” Latilevu added.

The event also underscored the importance of community support, and heartfelt thanks were expressed to all school stakeholders for their continued commitment and assistance. With a focus on skill development and community involvement, ACS remains on a hopeful path toward continued success in the realm of athletics.
