The State has called on the Magistrate’s Court in Suva to impose a stringent sentence for two men involved in a violent robbery at a local pharmacy last year. Harry Smith Draunidalo and Jese Nayavusoate faced charges of aggravated robbery, having pleaded guilty to the incident that occurred on August 29, 2025, and was captured by CCTV footage.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the men entered the pharmacy on Moti Street at night, armed with a meat chopper and an empty wine bottle. Prosecutor Alifereti Takalaivuna characterized the violence displayed during the robbery as excessive, highlighting that one of the accused attempted to strike victims with the chopper.
The total value of the stolen goods and cash, amounting to $4,815, has since been fully recovered. Mr. Takalaivuna emphasized the disregard shown by the defendants for the safety of the pharmacy staff, who provide essential services to the community. He noted a troubling rise in the number of robberies targeting businesses within the area.
Both Draunidalo and Nayavusoate have been in custody for seven months as they await their sentencing, scheduled for March 13. The case underscores the ongoing concerns regarding public safety and the need for effective deterrents against violent crime.
