Vanuatu United FC celebrated their first victory of the season with a remarkable performance against Bula FC during Round 3 of the league. Despite facing challenges in the earlier matches where they failed to secure a win, Lars Hopp’s team displayed resilience on the pitch. Notably, Hopp was absent due to a suspension following a red card received in a previous match against South Melbourne FC, as were several key players, including the influential midfielder William Cardona.
Bula FC entered the match in a stronger position on the league table and looked promising in the initial stages. Zacariah Harang came close to scoring, testing goalkeeper Matt Acton with a powerful shot. However, as the game progressed and with the cooler, rain-soaked conditions affecting gameplay, Vanuatu United gradually found their rhythm.
The breakthrough came when Alex Saniel scored, showcasing his skill and precision after Bill Kaltack’s setup. Saniel’s goal marked his fifth of the season and provided Vanuatu United with a crucial lead.
Bula FC’s Roy Krishna had a golden opportunity to equalize in the second half, only to have his header saved by Acton, followed by a narrow miss as he struck the post on the rebound. This missed chance became significant when Owen Smith, utilizing a quick attack, assisted Kathy Iamak, who scored after a VAR review confirmed he was onside.
Despite Bula FC ramping up their efforts to bounce back, Vanuatu United maintained a strong defense, successfully withstanding pressure even as Bula FC struck the woodwork twice late in the game. This victory not only boosts Vanuatu United’s morale but also keeps their aspirations for a top-four finish alive, showcasing their determination and potential as they move forward in the season.
