Unexpected Alliance: Fiji Chief Backs Unity Fiji Ahead of 2026 Elections

The chief of the yavusa Cawanisa, Ratu Tevita Ramasei III, has announced his decision to withdraw plans for forming a new political party and has instead pledged his allegiance to Unity Fiji. This significant move was formalized in Suva last week during a meeting with Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji.

Narube expressed his appreciation for Ratu Tevita and his community, the members of the Yavusa Navinoji, for their trust in Unity Fiji. He emphasized the party’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of resource owners, stating, “Despite many promises, we have seen no progress for decades. The landowners have been left behind.” Unity Fiji aims to change this narrative through its economic transformation program, which seeks to improve incomes for all Fijians.

The collaboration between Unity Fiji and Ratu Tevita’s group is anticipated to focus on economic development, aligning their goals with the party’s policies. Narube highlighted that the yavusa Cawanisa might also present candidates under Unity Fiji’s banner for future elections.

Moreover, Narube acknowledged that resource owners are among the poorest in Fiji, despite their vital role in the country’s economy. He stated, “The resource earners are some of the poorest in Fiji” and pointed out the failure of past efforts to uplift their livelihoods. With the intent to drive real change, Narube endorsed the innovative integrated transformation program crafted by Unity Fiji, which seeks to strengthen all aspects of development, including access to technology and finance.

This partnership comes at a crucial time as Unity Fiji gears up for the 2026 General Election, aiming to address and rectify historic economic disparities and to secure a better future for all citizens. The shift in alignment signifies a hopeful step towards unity and progressive political change in Fiji’s landscape, fostering an environment where the needs of the people can be prioritized and effectively addressed.
