A man has been taken into police custody following an accident that resulted in the tragic death of his 16-year-old nephew in Labasa. This incident occurred on December 4, and was confirmed by Acting Divisional Police Commander North Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo.

The victim, identified as Shalvin Lal from Tuatua in Labasa, left his guardian’s residence at midnight to meet his uncle. The accident unfolded shortly after 1am at Naduna, where it is alleged that Lal lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road and colliding with a culvert. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the injuries sustained from the impact.

According to Superintendent Soqosoqo, the uncle, who permitted his underage nephew to drive, has been interviewed at the Labasa Police Station. The police are compiling an investigation file, which will later be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further actions. Additionally, the investigation is exploring the aspect of Lal driving without a valid driver’s license.

This incident highlights the importance of responsible vehicle use, especially by young, inexperienced drivers. It’s a stark reminder of the potential consequences of allowing minors to operate vehicles and the legal ramifications that may accompany such decisions.

In such difficult times, it is crucial for families and guardians to engage in open dialogues about road safety and the responsibilities that come with driving. By fostering an understanding of these issues, futures can be safeguarded against similar tragedies.
