A devastating explosion occurred last evening at the Ministry of Fisheries Office in Wainibokasi, Nausori, leading to the tragic death of one individual and leaving two others in critical condition. According to police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro, the blast is believed to have originated from a diving gas tank.
This incident comes on the heels of another serious accident in the region. Just days ago, the Fiji Police reported a young man in his twenties who succumbed to injuries sustained in a yacht explosion in Nadi. The explosion erupted while the victim and a colleague were performing maintenance in the yacht’s engine compartment, resulting in severe burns for both; the colleague remains hospitalized in critical condition.
These recent accidents highlight an urgent need for rigorous safety measures in environments that handle flammable materials, whether in office settings or during maritime operations. The Ministry of Employment’s National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) is investigating safety protocols across various sectors, underscoring the essential nature of adhering to established safety standards to avert such incidents.
As the investigations proceed into both explosions, there is hope that their findings will lead to the enhancement of safety protocols. This could ensure better protection for workers and the general public in the future, emphasizing the importance of proactive safety measures in preventing further tragedies.
