A 17-year-old boy has been remanded in custody after appearing in the Nausori Magistrate Court, facing serious charges in connection with a horrific weekend car accident that resulted in the deaths of two men. Charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, as well as driving without a valid license and without the owner’s consent, the teenager allegedly took his father’s government vehicle keys while his father was asleep.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Bau Road, where the accused struck two men standing by the roadside before fleeing the scene. After informing his father about the accident, the father reported it to the authorities. The two victims, both in their 40s, were quickly rushed to the Nausori Health Centre but were tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.

In previous similar incidents, concerns have been raised regarding road safety, especially pertaining to young and unlicensed drivers. The ongoing challenges highlight the need for stricter regulations and proactive discussions within the community about responsible driving practices and the importance of adhering to traffic laws. Authorities continue to emphasize the value of driver education and awareness campaigns aimed at preventing such tragedies in the future.
