The students of Sigatoka Methodist School received an early Christmas gift, courtesy of the Tappoo family, a prominent corporate family in Fiji. Their longstanding relationship with the school was further solidified through the Tappoo Foundation, which recently provided essential support by constructing the necessary infrastructure for two 10,000-litre water tanks at the newly relocated Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu.
At the ceremonial inauguration, Kanti Tappoo, chairperson of the Tappoo Group and a former student of the school, reminisced about his childhood experiences in Sigatoka alongside his six brothers and two sisters. He emphasized the deep generational ties his family has with the institution, highlighting that even his two grandchildren have attended the primary and secondary levels there.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Kanti recalled his Sunday school experiences, crediting the late Reverend Edward Caleb for imparting important values during his early education. The Sigatoka Methodist School has recently moved from Laselase to Kulukulu on a 10-acre plot acquired by the Methodist Church, but faced challenges with inconsistent water supplies. School manager Jacob Pau’u noted that the new site currently hosts two Year 12 and two Year 13 classes, while plans for additional buildings are contingent upon funds.
Kanti Tappoo acknowledged the importance of addressing the water supply issue, stating that the newly installed tanks would significantly benefit the school’s operations and its students. He expressed the family’s commitment to supporting the school, which has played a pivotal role in their upbringing.
The Tappoo Group, founded by the late Tappoo Kanji in 1941, honors its anniversary by contributing to various causes, including support for the schools and villages closely connected to the family, such as Laselase and Nayawa.
Overall, this initiative not only addresses a pressing need at Sigatoka Methodist School but also showcases the Tappoo family’s commitment to community development, highlighting a beautiful legacy of giving back to the community.
