Tailevu Eyes Skipper Cup Glory as Semis Beckon

Tailevu Rugby Union’s president, Joe Rodan, has expressed his unwavering confidence in the team’s capabilities following a remarkable quarter-final victory against Lautoka in the Skipper Cup, with a score of 39-18 at Churchill Park. Rodan stated that after an impressive performance, he believes Tailevu can contend with any team in the tournament.

Rodan emphasized the team’s focus and their aspirations to win the Skipper Cup, noting, “We set our goals months ago to win the Skipper Cup and we are on track. The boys’ performance in this quarter-final shows they are capable.” The team will now prepare for the semi-final, building on this momentum.

Tailevu showcased dominance throughout the match, bolstered by the contributions of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua scrumhalf Simione Kuruvoli, who was pivotal in both driving the attack and maintaining pressure against Lautoka. The Tailevu strategy, which included effective kicking and chasing, allowed them to control possession and frustrate their opponents’ defense.

The first half saw Tailevu lead 24-6, thanks to tries from Vunaki Waqanibau, Mika Delana, and Saula Tui, alongside three conversions and a penalty from Anare Tabakaucoro. Lautoka managed to score via two penalties from Netava Nayacalevu. The second half continued positively for Tailevu, as they added another 15 points through tries from Kuruvoli and Maika Selema, with Tabakaucoro contributing further with a conversion and penalty.

While Lautoka managed to secure two consolation tries from Angelo Smith and Isikeli Rabitu, their efforts fell short as Tailevu asserted control to seal their place in the semi-finals.

This victory marks a significant milestone for Tailevu, who have shown resilience and improvement throughout the tournament. Rodan’s earlier statements about prioritizing community support appear to be paying off, as the local backing for the team has been instrumental in boosting morale and performance. The team is set to face challenging opponents in the semi-finals, but their recent form suggests a bright and hopeful outlook for Tailevu Rugby Union’s aspirations in the Skipper Cup.
