Taekwondo Fiji is gearing up to organize three significant tournaments for young athletes in the upcoming year, with the aim of fostering consistent training and dedication within the sport. National coach Neelu Nand emphasized that these competitions will provide a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and earn a place on the national team.
The tournaments are tentatively scheduled to take place during the first term school holiday, mid-year, and again in December. Nand has reached out to major clubs in the area, inviting them to volunteer as hosts for these events. While a club has yet to be confirmed for the opening tournament, it is likely that Civic Taekwondo, Nakasi, and Suva clubs will host them in succession.
Currently, there are around nine clubs registered under Fiji Taekwondo, including Civic, Suva, Master Ra, Nakasi, Nausori, Sawani, Ba, and Nadi. Previously, about 150 young athletes participated, and there is an ambitious goal to increase that number to approximately 200 for next year’s tournaments.
This initiative not only aims to enhance the skills of young taekwondo practitioners but also underscores the commitment to nurturing talent in the sport in Fiji. With the growing participation anticipated, these tournaments could serve as a strong stepping stone for aspiring athletes looking to advance in taekwondo, fostering both growth and community involvement.
Hope remains high as the sport continues to gain traction, promising exciting developments for the athletic landscape in Fiji.
