The High Commission of India in Suva recently organized a unity run to commemorate International Mother Language Day, celebrating the rich linguistic diversity and cultural heritage of the community. This event brought together 49 participants, illustrating the multicultural tapestry of Fiji.
During the event, Indian High Commissioner Suneet Mehta emphasized the significance of mother languages, stating they embody “memories, values and traditions” and play an essential role in shaping personal and collective identities.
Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Koliniwai Ravunawa reinforced the importance of communication in one’s native language, suggesting it fosters trust and strengthens community bonds.
The run took place at My Suva Picnic Park, where attendees embraced the spirit of unity, enjoying a day filled with cultural appreciation and camaraderie. Community members, including local officials and police officers, actively participated, enhancing the event’s sense of belonging and togetherness.
