Struggling at Home: Fiji’s Rising Street Kids Crisis

The Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Lynda Tabuya, emphasized the role of family dynamics in the issue of homelessness among children in Fiji. She pointed out that while the government is taking steps to deter children from migrating to urban areas and becoming homeless, the ultimate responsibility lies with parents and the home environment.

Tabuya noted that pressures within families, combined with issues such as substance abuse, violence, and negligence, significantly contribute to the growing number of children living on the streets. To address this pressing concern, the government has established a Taskforce tasked with investigating the underlying causes leading to child homelessness.

Despite some success in removing children from the streets and placing them in rehabilitation centers, Tabuya acknowledged a shortage of trained professionals equipped to care for these vulnerable children. She highlighted that while several centers have been created to support them, the lack of experienced staff remains a challenge.

Responding to questions from Opposition Member Praveen Bala regarding the placement process for street children, Tabuya explained that a Regulatory Order exists to ensure that children are appropriately placed in safe homes, with careful consideration of separating those at risk from those who may pose a harm.
