The Chief Executive of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), Joweli Cawaki, has emphasized the crucial role that enforcement officers play in protecting Fiji’s maritime environment. During the In-house Regulators Training, he reminded attendees of their responsibilities under the Maritime Transport Act 2013, which gives MSAF the authority to regulate and enforce compliance with national maritime laws.
Cawaki highlighted the significance of issuing marine infringement notices, noting that since the continuation of this practice in June 2024, MSAF has already issued 132 such notices this year. He stressed that the proper execution of the powers granted to MSAF is vital, requiring skill in observing and documenting violations.
The two-day training session includes 14 participants from MSAF, aimed at enhancing the skills necessary for effective enforcement of maritime regulations. With improved training, MSAF aims to boost compliance and strengthen maritime safety across Fiji.
This effort reflects MSAF’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that both local and visiting mariners adhere to safety practices, which is especially important as the festive season approaches, coinciding with the cyclone season. As both public safety and compliance are paramount, the authority calls on the community to be vigilant and report unsafe practices.
The proactive approach of MSAF in enhancing training and enforcement mechanisms can foster a safer maritime environment, allowing families and travelers to enjoy their maritime experiences with greater peace of mind during the holiday season.
