Former All Blacks number 8 Pita Gus Sowakula is expressing strong interest in joining the Fiji Water Flying Fijians, according to head coach Mick Byrne. Byrne recently visited Europe to meet with players, including Sowakula, now with Clermont, and his teammate Peceli Yato.
Sowakula will become eligible to play for Fiji after his three-year stand down period, which concludes on July 9. He last represented New Zealand in a match against Ireland in 2022. Byrne noted, “He’s very keen. He’s put his hand up to be part of the selection pool, which is pleasing,” during their conversation in France. While no guarantees were made, Byrne emphasized the importance of selecting players based on current performance rather than past accolades.
Byrne’s trip also included discussions with senior players such as Waisea Nayacalevu, Sam Matavesi, and Semi Radradra at their clubs, allowing him to outline the year’s schedule and assess their training environments. He is evaluating around 80 players for selection in upcoming July and November international Tests, strongly indicating a mix of experienced and emerging talents could be key to Fiji’s competitiveness.
Byrne is optimistic about the potential squad, expecting solid participation from Northern Hemisphere players, stating, “At this stage, an open mind to the mix of the squad… should help us to pick a really good squad for the July window.”
The inclusion of seasoned players like Sowakula reflects a trend in rugby where athletes are returning to represent their heritage, aligning with the evolving eligibility rules. This could not only strengthen the Flying Fijians’ capabilities but also foster a brighter future in international rugby as they gear up for a series of significant matches. The prospects of integrating experienced players into the team brings hope and anticipation for fans and supporters alike.
