Twin sisters Regina and Josephine Waqatabu made a remarkable impression at the 2025 Coca-Cola Games, demonstrating not only their athletic prowess but also the strong bond of family support that lies behind their success. Competing in the sub junior girls’ high jump for the first time, the 13-year-old sisters showcased their skills by finishing first and second, with Regina taking gold by clearing a height of 1.47 meters, while Josephine followed closely with a silver jump of 1.44 meters.

The excitement surrounding their performance was amplified by a light-hearted family competition—with their mother promising a $100 reward for the gold medalist. Regina humorously commented on the stakes, highlighting the playful sibling rivalry that fueled their determination. “I hope she remembers, because it’s a deal!” she said, grinning after her win.

Regina initially felt apprehensive about competing at such a high level but expressed gratitude for her achievement, admitting, “I was scared. I thought I’d only win silver because I knew how prepared the other girls were.” With her goal set at jumping 1.50 meters, she was pleased to come close. Josephine, proud of her silver, dedicated her jump to their coach, Freddy Inoke, and their late brother, Iosefo, who passed away last year. Her emotion resonated deeply, as she acknowledged the support of their family during this poignant moment.

The friendly banter between the twins continued even as they vaulted through the competition, showcasing both their competitive spirit and strong mutual encouragement. Josephine playfully remarked on the outcome, stating, “She always told me she’d win gold and I’d get silver, and that’s exactly what happened.” Such camaraderie not only adds to their achievements but also encapsulates the joy of competing together, bound by a shared goal to make their family proud.

The Waqatabu sisters’ success adds to the vibrant narrative of the Coca-Cola Games this year, which have seen exceptional displays of talent and community support. This event brings together young athletes from around Fiji, reflecting collective aspirations and making it a stage for the celebration of hard work and familial love. Their achievements serve as an inspiring reminder that with determination and support, dreams can be realized, and the future of athletics in Fiji looks promising.
