Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected Across Fiji This Week

Weather Update

Gather ’round, folks! It’s that time again where we navigate the ever-dramatic weather diaries of Fiji. As of this morning, a somewhat sluggish and moody trough of low pressure has decided to hang out over the eastern parts of our beautiful islands. Think of it as that friend who just won’t leave the party! As a result, we’ll be witnessing an increase in northeasterly breezes, and not to brag, but the winds do think they’re *pretty* fresh.

Now, here’s the scoop for today. Expect a smorgasbord of occasional showers, and some of those little rain droplets might just pack a punch with heavy showers and a few friendly thunderstorms. This summer drama is primarily taking place in eastern and interior Viti Levu — that’s anywhere from Serua-Namosi through to Suva and even inland to Ra and parts of Tailevu. The same goes for eastern Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and, because we love to be inclusive, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu, and neighboring islands. So, if it feels like Mother Nature’s throwing a bit of a tantrum, that’s why!

For places like Navua, Suva, and Nausori, prepare for showers that could turn heavy at any second, accompanied by the occasional claps of thunder. Meanwhile, down by Sigatoka and the Coral Coast, it’ll be cloudy (surprise!) with brief showers and some possible thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings to spice things up.

Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, you’re on the same rain train. Expect clouds to keep up their busy schedule of brief showers and lively thunderstorms later. For our northern cousins in Labasa and Savusavu, don’t be too alarmed if the sky decides to weep a bit.

For the islands of Lau and Lomaiviti, how about a little bit of everything as well? Showers and a sprinkling of thunderstorms will keep things interesting. Kadavu, just like everyone else, is geared up for occasional showers and possible thunder crashers.

And let’s not forget our friends in Rotuma, where an active low-pressure trough seems to be relishing the spotlight. They can also expect periods of heavy rain, a sprinkle of squally thunderstorms, and seas that might feel just a little rough around the edges.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, the rain is expected to ramp up considerably — so bring out your umbrellas and possibly consider taking your boat for a test drive! The forecast shows frequent and heavy rain across eastern and interior areas, and don’t be surprised if some of the downpours come with a side of thunderstorms.

Stay safe and dry, everyone! And remember, if you see dark clouds forming, that might just be nature’s way of telling you to invite a friend over for a good old indoor board game marathon.
