A heavy rain warning has been issued for the Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti Groups, Kadavu, and surrounding smaller islands in Fiji. The warning also extends to the eastern part of Viti Levu, covering areas such as Serua, Namosi, Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, Rakiraki, and Tavua.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist tonight, with conditions expected to gradually transition to showers by tomorrow. The cause of these adverse weather conditions is attributed to a trough of low pressure that is currently moving slowly eastward across the country.
Previously issued warnings for the western half of Viti Levu, including the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, have been cancelled. However, the Fiji Met Service warns that the continued heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas, informal settlements, and business districts. Additionally, some roads and crossings may become impassable due to rising water levels, and urban areas with poor drainage could face surface flooding. Visibility on the roads is also likely to be reduced during periods of intense rainfall.
Forecasters express a moderate level of confidence in the outlook, urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary safety measures. The current weather situation not only poses challenges but also highlights the importance of community resilience and preparedness. While the rain can cause inconvenience, it is also essential for replenishing water supplies vital for agriculture and local ecosystems.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed on weather updates as the situation develops, emphasizing that collective action and vigilance within communities can help mitigate the effects of such severe weather.
