Suspended schoolteacher Kishore Kumar has been instructed to prepare an apology letter for Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua, to be presented in the Suva Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. Mr. Kumar is charged with one count of indecently annoying a person and one count of criminal intimidation.
The allegations claim that Kumar made false assertions about the existence of explicit videos featuring Ms. Qereqeretabua on his Facebook page, Kishore Kumar Publications. During today’s proceedings, Trial Magistrate Seini Puamau noted that Mr. Kumar intends to “plead out” but emphasized the necessity of addressing the cases individually. Kumar readily agreed to the directive of composing an apology letter to Ms. Qereqeretabua.
Magistrate Puamau highlighted the weight of words, stating, “Words hurt and words can also heal.” Kumar remains in custody pending trial.
This case reflects ongoing concerns regarding the misuse of social media and the importance of responsible digital communication. Previous reports involving Kumar indicate a history of allegations related to online conduct, raising significant issues around online harassment and digital privacy.
As the legal proceedings unfold, there is optimism that they will reinforce the principles of accountability and digital responsibility, contributing to a safer online community for everyone.
