Scandal in Government: Investigation Launched into PM’s Security Detail

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has initiated an investigation into a member of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s security detail over allegations of eloping with a fellow official from the Prime Minister’s Office. According to senior government sources, the incident took place approximately two weeks ago, involving individuals who are both said to be married to other partners.

While there were claims that the couple escaped with government-issued electronic devices, Commissioner Tudravu has **denied these allegations**, emphasizing that no theft of government property occurred. He confirmed that the investigation focuses on the conduct of the officer and their overseas travel processes.

All officers in the Prime Minister’s security detail are police members required to adhere to the Fiji Police Act of 1965, which includes codes of professional conduct. When asked about the current stance on extramarital affairs, Tudravu refrained from commenting on the recent repeal of police policies regarding such conduct. Instead, he stated that there are procedures in place to handle officers’ conduct, ensuring that any official complaints will result in a thorough investigation.

Luke Rokovada, chair of the Public Service Commission, expressed concern about the implications of this incident on the morale and conduct standards expected of civil servants, highlighting that the PSC does not tolerate extramarital affairs among government employees. He noted the need for developing policies to guide behavior in such situations.

Attempts made by The Fiji Times to reach Dr. Lesi Korovavala, the permanent secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, for further comment were unsuccessful, as he was said to be in a meeting. It was reported that he was on leave during the incident. Meanwhile, Dr. Reijieli Taga, the acting permanent secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was also unavailable for comments as inquiries were ongoing.

This situation underscores a pivotal moment for Fijian governance, drawing attention to the necessity for ethical conduct in public service and the importance of accountability among officials. As the investigation unfolds, there remains hope that adherence to the rule of law and ethical standards will ultimately strengthen public trust in the governance of Fiji.
