A man in his 30s has been arrested and charged with sacrilege following a break-in at the Nasinu Gurdwara Guru Ravidass Temple on Saturday night. According to police reports, an unknown individual forcefully entered the temple, stealing a gas cylinder, burners, and various catering equipment.
The police were notified of the incident over the weekend and the Valelevu Crime Operations team quickly acted upon leads gathered from the community. The suspect was located in the Valelevu area, where authorities successfully recovered the stolen items. He was charged with one count of sacrilege and is scheduled to appear in court today.
This incident follows a worrying trend of sacrilege in Fiji, with several recent cases reported across various religious sites. For example, similar break-ins have been noted at the Dugapatu Mariamman Temple, where sound equipment was stolen, and at residential temples in Lautoka, highlighting the pressing issue of thefts against places of worship.
Community leaders stress the importance of vigilance and cooperation in the fight against such acts. There is hope that strengthened protective measures, as well as collaboration between law enforcement and the public, can safeguard these sacred spaces. Encouragingly, these incidents can also be a catalyst for communities to unite in creating an environment of respect and protection for diverse faiths. The ongoing investigations symbolize a collective effort to restore safety and sanctity in places of worship across the region.
