Fiji’s Rugby Heartbeat: Angelo Smith Returns to His Roots with Drua!

Former Waratahs lock Angelo Smith is set to return to his roots in Fiji by joining the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua on a two-year contract. Smith, originally from Nananu, Tailevu, with family ties to Lomati, Kabara in Lau, expressed his excitement about playing for the Drua in front of family and friends, marking a significant step in his professional rugby career.

Smith joins the Drua after a stint with the Melbourne Rebels in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific, bringing with him a wealth of experience, including 20 Super Rugby caps. His versatility allows him to play both lock and blindside flanker, adding depth to the Drua’s forward pack. General Manager Rugby Baden Stephenson praised Smith’s abilities, saying, “He will add size, skill, speed, and experience to our forward pack. It is great that players want to return home, and Angelo’s best rugby is in front of him.”

The recruitment of players like Smith reflects a broader trend of Fijian athletes returning home to contribute to local clubs. This movement not only enhances the competitive landscape of Fijian rugby but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes in the region. Smith’s journey in rugby began at Marist Brothers High School and included significant achievements, such as helping Wests Rugby win the Hospital Cup after a long drought.

As the Fijian Drua prepares for the upcoming season, the addition of players like Smith injects hope and enthusiasm into the team and its supporters. With a solid mix of local talent returning to the fold, the Drua is poised for an exciting season ahead, bringing renewed energy to Fijian rugby on the international stage.
