Former Melbourne Rebels lock Angelo Smith has officially joined the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua on a two-year contract. The announcement of his signing came earlier today, following hints on the club’s social media the day before.
Angelo Smith, who is originally from Nananu, Tailevu, brings considerable experience to the Drua, having played 20 Super Rugby matches. His rugby journey began at Marist Brothers High School and Saint Thomas Primary School in Lautoka, and his acquisition is part of a broader strategy by the Drua to strengthen their roster with talented players showcasing a strong connection to Fiji.
This move mirrors the recent trend of Fijian athletes returning to their roots to enhance local rugby, as seen with other signings by the Drua, including Iosefo Namoce, who also signed a two-year deal earlier. Namoce has emerged as a promising talent, having impressed in provincial rugby and gaining his opportunities in Australia. Another notable addition, Temo Mayanavanua, has announced he will join the Drua starting in 2026, further underscoring the club’s focus on local talent.
The addition of skilled players like Smith not only aims to boost the team’s performance ahead of the upcoming Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season but also offers a sense of optimism and inspiration to aspiring rugby players across Fiji. As the new season approaches, fans are looking forward to seeing how this diverse talent will contribute to the success of the Fijian Drua on the field.
