Rural Voices Rise: Will the Budget Address Fiji’s Infrastructure Woes?

Villagers from Savusavu, Naitasiri, are voicing their urgent call for significant changes in the upcoming national budget. A primary concern for these residents is the dire state of their roads, which they argue impedes their ability to farm effectively and access markets for selling their produce.

Luisa Koroiqele, a local yaqona farmer, highlighted the detrimental impact of poor road conditions, which not only slow down transportation but also hinder their farming operations. “The condition of our road requires improvement in the upcoming budget. Addressing this issue will significantly enhance our ability to transport our produce to the market for sale,” she explained. The tough terrain in Nabuabuco complicates transportation further, making the need for better infrastructure even more pressing.

In light of the budget announcement scheduled for next Friday, other community members are rallying in support of enhanced resources for women in farming, including sewing machines and small business assistance. Vasenai Tabu, another farmer from the region, expressed hope that their voices will finally be acknowledged. “We hope that this budget will provide the necessary support for women in our community,” she emphasized.

This call for better infrastructure resonates with similar appeals from other rural stakeholders across Fiji, who have been vocal about the need for improvements in roads and access to basic services under the upcoming 2025-2026 budget. In Labasa, vendors have expressed frustration over rising costs of goods and the need for governmental focus on everyday challenges over political disputes.

As communities across Fiji prepare for the budget announcement, there remains a sense of optimism that constructive public input will pave the way for meaningful changes. The commitment to enhancing infrastructure and supporting local economies reflects a growing awareness of the unique challenges faced by rural farmers and vendors, and the hope is that policymaking will increasingly align with the voices of those who need it most.

This engagement signifies a potential for a more responsive governance structure that prioritizes the well-being of all citizens, indicating a hopeful path forward as the community of Savusavu and others await their government’s response to their pressing needs.
