Faith, family sacrifice, and unwavering discipline have been instrumental in guiding Shifadjzic Khan, a young educator from rural Sigatoka, towards remarkable academic achievements in Asia. At just 30 years old, Khan’s completion of a master’s degree in South Korea symbolizes not merely personal success but also the fulfillment of a heartfelt promise to his parents, embodying his journey of perseverance.

Currently a teacher at Christian Mission Fellowship College, Khan attributes his academic journey to the strong foundation laid by his upbringing. “I thank God for granting me the knowledge, skills, and wisdom throughout this journey,” he expressed. He emphasizes that this achievement extends beyond himself, belonging to his family and the community that nurtured him.

Growing up in the farming community of Maro, Khan highlighted how his parents’ sacrifices fueled his ambition for higher education. “My father, Masood Khan, instilled in me the values of discipline and integrity, while my mother always believed in my potential amidst challenges.”

Becoming the first individual from his community to earn a master’s degree abroad holds significant personal value for him. “It represents a return of honor to my parents,” he remarked. He successfully attained the esteemed KOICA Master’s Scholarship after a rigorous national selection process, acknowledging the weight of responsibility he felt as the sole representative from Fiji’s civil service.

Khan viewed this opportunity not only as personal achievement but also as a chance for national representation and capacity building for Fiji. He expressed gratitude for the late Viori Odro, whose mentorship significantly encouraged him.

His studies at Kyungpook National University required intense dedication and commitment. “The academic culture emphasized punctuality, organization, and excellence. I learned to manage my time effectively and maintain high professionalism,” he noted. His hard work culminated in accolades such as the Outstanding Research Student Award and recognition for Best Thesis Research Work, achievements he credits to his perseverance and consistency.

Khan advocates for the idea that overseas education should invariably contribute to national progress. “Such scholarships are rare and transformative. Students must maximize every resource and commit fully to excellence,” he advised. He believes that education abroad transcends personal growth; it is about returning home equipped to uplift communities and instill pride in families and the nation.

Through his journey, Khan embodies the spirit of determination and community spirit, serving as an inspiration for many aspiring students in Fiji and beyond.
