Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata recently led a two-day workshop in Labasa aimed at teaching fundamental rugby league skills to aspiring players. He emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive environment for the growth of rugby league in the Northern Division. Kativerata noted that there is a prevailing notion among young athletes that rugby sevens and fifteens are the only respected forms of rugby, a mindset that needs to change.

He highlighted examples of successful players like Semi Valemi and Semi Radradra, who hail from the North and have achieved success in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL). Kativerata stressed that while rugby league is a straightforward game, mastering its basic principles is crucial for players who aspire to excel.

The coach also discussed the promising opportunities for Northern-based players to play professionally abroad. He proposed a grassroots initiative aimed at introducing players as young as 14 to the sport. This initiative is part of a six-year project by the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) to promote rugby league across Vanua Levu and other maritime islands beyond Viti Levu.

Motu Lalagavesi, a female participant and coach for Macuata women’s rugby, expressed her enthusiasm for the sport, particularly the six-tackle rule, which she finds engaging and enjoyable. Northern State Rugby League interim president Alan Tuinasoni encouraged the 22 clubs in the division to prioritize the development of women’s rugby, indicating significant activity in the Labasa and Dreketi zones.

This proactive approach to expanding the reach of rugby league in Fiji shows a promising future for the sport. With dedicated efforts in grassroots development and inclusion, there is hope for a thriving and diverse rugby league community that not only nurtures talent but also encourages participation from all demographics.

In summary, the initiative led by Wise Kativerata aims to elevate rugby league in Fiji’s Northern Division, promoting inclusivity and opening doors for future athletes at both professional and grassroots levels.
