Candidate Master Rudr Prasad has continued his impressive streak by securing back-to-back titles at the Fiji Chess Federation’s September Rapid Championship, held at the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala Campus. The event attracted 51 participants of varying ages, with Prasad demonstrating outstanding consistency and skill, achieving 6.5 points out of a possible 7.
Just behind him, Ronald Terubea delivered an admirable performance with 5.5 points. Yash Maharaj and Kartik Chandra also showed commendable skill, finishing in third and fourth positions, respectively.
In the Female Category, Women Candidate Master Cydel Terubea excelled with an impressive score of 6/7, marking the second-highest performance in the tournament overall. Other notable female participants included Gloria Sukhu, Useli Herath, and Latileta Masau.
The championship highlighted the depth of talent in Fiji’s chess community, showcasing impressive performances from youth players, such as Zayne Elmond and Yajas Sharma, who claimed victories in their respective age divisions. This underscores a bright future for chess in the region, driven by promising young talent.
Kristy Fong, the General Secretary and Tournament Organiser, praised the high level of competition and expressed enthusiasm for the growing number of skilled young players in Fiji. She emphasized how events like these foster the development of chess across all age groups, from beginners to veterans, reinforcing the Federation’s commitment to the sport.
In past events, Prasad has consistently performed well, as seen in the Vodafone Fiji July Rapid Chess tournament and the National Blitz Chess Championship, further consolidating his reputation as a formidable player in the chess community. Continuous participation and achievements by players like Prasad highlight the dynamic and expanding chess culture in Fiji, offering hope and optimism for the sport’s future in the region.
