Landowners in significant areas of Nasinu are expressing their frustrations regarding the increasing social challenges affecting their communities. They have noted a worrying decline in respect for traditional landowners and a growing tendency to disregard previously established agreements.
Kolinio Tabuadrevula, the traditional chief of the Nawavatu Clan, representing the Rokara and Kalabu regions, emphasized the sacrifices made by their ancestors who offered land to various groups to promote better living standards. However, he is deeply concerned about the diminishing mutual respect that appears to be eroding over time.
Tabuadrevula pointed out a troubling surge in social issues and illegal activities that endanger the future of the younger generation. He remarked, “Individuals come here with high hopes for better opportunities and education for their children, yet after settling, they often lose sight of honoring the Vanua, its leadership, and the community’s decisions.”
Alarming behaviors such as suspicious visits to certain homes during odd hours and incidences of drug confiscation have been reported in the area. In response, the community has enacted stricter regulations to tackle these challenges. Tabuadrevula is urging residents to abandon illegal behaviors, particularly those related to drugs, to safeguard the future of their youth.
This situation mirrors broader concerns identified in regions like Naitasiri, where provincial councils are also grappling with the rise in crime and illegal activities within informal settlements. Leaders in those areas are advocating for the implementation of awareness programs aimed at empowering communities to collectively address these critical issues.
The experiences of Nasinu, alongside similar narratives from other regions, highlight an urgent need for community unity and a reaffirmation of traditional values to counteract increasing social challenges. As these communities come together, there is a hopeful outlook that through enhanced communication and adherence to regulations, they can create a safer, more respectful environment for the generations to come.
