Fifteen-year-old Nehemiah Elder has emerged as a standout at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute training camp in Apia, Samoa, where he earned the prestigious title of “best lifter” among a diverse group of 16 international competitors and 15 from Samoa. His accomplishments were recognized alongside other notable athletes, including 2023 Fiji Sportsman of the Year Taniela Rainibogi and fellow competitor Daniel Shaw.
Guided by his father, Henry Elder, who serves as Weightlifting Fiji’s coach, Nehemiah’s participation was part of a successful camp where all athletes achieved personal bests, with two surpassing their previous records. Henry Elder expressed his satisfaction with their performances, voicing encouragement for the upcoming competitions, saying, “I’m very, very happy about it, and I’m very encouraged at this stage leading into these competitions that they’re already hitting PBs.”
Nehemiah’s recent achievements build upon a remarkable career that includes being named the Vodafone Young Male Athlete of the Year at the Fiji Sports Awards. He has also excelled on international platforms, securing a silver medal at the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in India.
