Breaking Barriers: Meet the First Female Firefighter of Navua

Virisila Maramanivalu, a trailblazing probationary firefighter, is breaking barriers in her male-dominated field as she navigates both challenges and triumphs in her role at the new Navua Fire Station. Maramanivalu, hailing from Serea in Naitasiri, proudly stands as the only woman among her male colleagues, embodying strength and determination.

At just 28 years old, Maramanivalu is not only the first female firefighter in her village but also believed to be the first in the Central Division to be stationed at the newly established Navua Fire Station. Her passion for her profession shines through as she expresses her enthusiasm for serving her community during emergencies. “I am so happy and proud that I am the only female firefighter in Navua,” she stated, highlighting her commitment to teamwork in battling fires.

Maramanivalu’s journey was not without obstacles; she faced skepticism about her ability to work in a predominantly male environment. Initially assigned to the Lami station for training, she eagerly awaited the opening of the Navua station, where she could truly make her mark. The new facility includes separate quarters for female firefighters, creating a supportive environment for her career growth.

Her training experience was rigorous, filled with both struggle and perseverance, leading to her resolve to excel in her duties and contribute positively to her community’s safety. “After my passing out, I was so happy to have my family that was supporting me,” she shared, thanking her guardians for their encouragement.

Maramanivalu aims not only to thrive in her current role but also to become a firefighter instructor in the future. Her message to aspiring female firefighters is clear: “If you have a passion, go for it. Like in rugby, use your talents because you can get a job.” Drawing from her experiences in rugby, she exemplifies how overcoming personal struggles can lead to professional success.

This narrative of empowerment mirrors similar stories of women succeeding in traditionally male-dominated careers, showcasing that with determination and the right support, women can and do thrive. Maramanivalu serves as an inspiring role model for young girls, encouraging them to pursue their dreams without limitations.

In a world still grappling with gender stereotypes, Maramanivalu’s journey symbolizes hope and progress towards equality in the workplace, reminding us that barriers can be dismantled through tenacity and courage.
