The Ministry of Women in Fiji has raised alarms regarding the diminishing traditional craftsmanship skills within the nation, which have been essential for creating cultural artifacts. Permanent Secretary Eseta Nadakuitavuki highlighted the urgent need to preserve these skills to protect Fiji’s rich cultural heritage and to ensure the continued production of authentic traditional goods.
Nadakuitavuki pointed out that the Ministry is taking proactive steps to identify artisans in rural areas who possess traditional craftsmanship skills. These artisans will be connected with facilitators to help pass on their knowledge, ensuring that vital skills are not lost to time. She noted, “We are witnessing the loss of many traditional skills. However, we are grateful for our women, who are showing an interest in learning about these crafts and maintaining the connection with their cultural roots.”
In alignment with these preservation efforts, the Ministry is planning to launch programs next year aimed at training and empowering the younger generation, particularly focusing on both women and men in mastering traditional craftsmanship skills. The aim is to embed these crafts firmly within Fijian culture, enabling them to flourish for future generations.
The Permanent Secretary elaborated on the importance of these skills as a reflection of Fiji’s identity, emphasizing that they contribute greatly to the nation’s cultural landscape. To reinforce this initiative, the Ministry is collaborating with the Fiji Arts Council, which will assist in conducting training sessions and providing a platform for artisans to showcase their work and knowledge.
