The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has promptly responded to reports of an oil spill in Sigatoka, which was initially highlighted through a letter from Energy Fiji Limited (EFL). The ministry has confirmed that a specialized waste and pollution control team was dispatched to the site without delay. Upon inspection, it was determined that the oil discharge stemmed from a separator pit linked to the EFL Sigatoka Powerhouse, with the situation worsened by heavy rainfall.
Officials from the ministry conducted meetings with the village headman, known as the turaga ni koro, from Nasama to provide updates and reassurance regarding the spill. Despite EFL’s efforts to deploy a response kit, community feedback suggested that the measures in place were inadequate for effectively managing the spillage.
The Ministry of Environment reiterated their dedication to collaborating closely with EFL to contain the oil discharge, seeking a swift resolution to protect the local environment and its residents. To ensure that the community is kept informed, the ministry has also communicated with the turaga ni koro from Vunavutu.
